This is the first time the Public Service Commission has released the provisional answer key immediately after the exam ended.
Candidates have until May 31 to register objections to it.
Many experts also say that the 2026 Prelims was perhaps one of the most different papers so far. Meanwhile, UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar’s reaction to the CSE Prelims has also come to light.
Chairman admits answer key will provide clarity:
UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar has shared a post on LinkedIn. He said, ‘I understand that this year’s Prelims was tough and challenging for many aspirants. In such a situation, the official provisional answer key provides more clarity.
Most answers in the answer key are from books, government websites, government press releases, and reputed newspapers, which aspirants use for preparation. If any answer in the answer key needs review, you can submit your feedback on the official QPRep portal.
Shekhar Datt, who conducts UPSC preparation in Chandigarh, posted on social media that ‘This was one of the toughest UPSC Prelims exams ever.’ He gave UPSC a new name and called it the ‘Unprecedented Public Service Commission’.
Maximum questions from Art and Culture
In the General Studies paper this time, the maximum 20 questions were asked from History, Art and Culture. Apart from this, 19 questions came from Economy, 18 from Science and Technology, 13 from Geography, 11 from Environment, and 8 questions from Polity and Governance. Meanwhile, 11 questions were asked from other subjects.
Mains Exam to be held on August 21:
UPSC Prelims Exam 2026 was held on May 24. The Mains Exam will be held on August 21, 2026. The interview of selected candidates will be held between January – April 2027.
This new pattern of UPSC is now impacting other competitive exams as well. The Bihar Public Service Commission i.e. BPSC exams have also been showing an analytical pattern like UPSC for the past few years. Candidates preparing for the BPSC 72nd exam to be held in July will now prepare for the exam more deeply.
