Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

UPSC will conduct a pen-and-paper combined recruitment test for shortlisting candidates for both posts on 1st November 2026. Key details:

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Type: Objective, multiple-choice questions
  • Medium: English and Hindi
  • Maximum marks: 300
  • Negative marking: 1/3rd mark deducted per wrong answer; no penalty for unattempted questions

UPSC Principal and Vice Principal Syllabus

The syllabus broadly covers General Knowledge (including current social, economic and cultural issues), Hindi and English language skills, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude, Educational policies and measurement/evaluation, Management and Financial administration, Office Procedure, Pedagogy in Education, and Digital Literacy.

CRT Centres: Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Chennai, Delhi, Dispur (Guwahati), Jaipur, Jammu, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Port Blair, Ranchi, and Visakhapatnam. UPSC has noted that this list is subject to change.

Selection Process 2026

  • Combined Recruitment Test (CRT)—objective test as detailed above, carrying 75% weightage.
  • Personal Interview—carrying 25% weightage, out of 100 marks.
  • Minimum qualifying marks: 50 for General/EWS, 45 for OBC, and 40 for SC/ST/PwBD.
  • Document Verification—of educational qualifications, experience, category certificates, and other claims made in the application.
